Welcome to the new Rare Songs Page at Above The Trees. I've expanded and added some more songs, and I am currently in the progress of upgrading many of the current files to higher quality MP3's, as well as adding more sound clips. Because of my limited server space, the last 6 rare songs are links from the archive at nineinchnails.net. If you ever find that those links don't work for any reason, please notify me. If you have any suggestions of songs you'd like to see on this page, please e-mail me.

FILE DESCRIPTION FILENAME TYPE
Homer Simpson On NiN A short sound clip from the 1996 "Hullabalooza" episode of The Simpsons, in which, at one part, Homer is in a record store and is shocked to find that his favorite bands from the '70's are no longer popular. He then looks up at the wall where there are posters for Sonic Youth and Nine Inch Nails. This sound clip is of him saying, "Now here are some of your no-name bands... Sonic Youth? Nine Inch Nails?" See the May 4th, 1997 News report for more info. hulla3.wav WAV Audio File
"Welcome Nine Inch Nails!" Larry Bud Melman (the old guy from the 1-800-COLLECT commercials)'s great introduction for NiN's performance at Woodstock '94. For a wonderful picture of Melman hanging out with the band, click here. welcome.mp3 MPEG 3
Trent Speaks A brief soundclip of Trent talking about his music, an exclusive from early 1997's SpinOnline interview. trent.wav WAV Audio File
Paul Schaffer Playing Closer A short clip from the June 4th, 1997 Late Show With David Letterman of Paul Schaffer, Dave's musical sidekick, playing what sounds very much like a cover of NiN's Closer as a lead-in to a commercial break. pscloser.wav WAV Audio File
Past The Mission Sample Coming Soon A sample of the chorus from the Tori Amos song Past The Mission (from the album under the pink), in which Trent supplies back-up vocals. You'll have to listen carefully, but you can clearly hear Trent's deeper voice behind Tori's singing "past the mission, behind the prison doors..." etc. mission.mp3 MPEG 3

Help:

The files on this page come in four basic formats: .MP3, or MPEG Layer 3; .RA, or RealAudio; .WAV or WAV Audio File; and .ZIP or ZIP Compressed File. MP3's have become the new standard for digital audio on the internet. .MP3 files allow stereo near-cd quality duplications at relatively small file sizes. RealAudio is another high quality digital sound format, and it is also the standard for streaming over the net. Many slower computers will not be able to handle some of the longer .RA files on this page (i.e. "the perfect drug"). .WAV files can be extremely high quality, but do not use any sort of compression mechanism and thus are usually only used for small sound files. A .ZIP file is a file that has been compressed to save space. It must be decompressed before the file can be used.

If you have problems downloading or saving these files to your hard drive (i.e. when you click on the link all you get is gibberish text), click on the link to the file with your right mouse button (assuming you're using netscape for windows; otherwise you may have to do this a different way) and choose "Save Link Location..." This will allow you to save the file directly to your hard drive. For Macintosh users, click on the link and hold the button down, then a menu will come up and you can choose "Save Link Location..."

If you need an .MP3 player, click here to download WinPlay3, an excellent MPEG Audio player for Windows (see the "regcode" text file for the registration number).

If you're using a Mac, go here for info on MP3 players for the Macintosh.

A RealAudio player can be downloaded at www.realaudio.com.

.WAV files will play in Netscape or MSIE, and most computers come with .WAV players pre-installed. If you don't have one, try shareware.com.

You can find utilities to UNZIP compressed files at www.pkware.com.
