getting started with web hosting
getting started
the first thing that you will need to administer your web site is a user name and password. without either of
these, you cannot control the content of your web site. any time you try to edit or administer your web site you
will be prompted for this information. if you do not know either your user name or password, you should contact
technical support. these credentials will be used to authenticate you when using ftp or frontpage.
editing your web site
to edit the content of your web site, you can use ftp or frontpage (if it is included with your account).
ftp
to use ftp, you will need a ftp client such as cuteftp or ws_ftp.
once you have a client installed you can connect to the ftp server with the following information:
- host or address: nineinchnails.net
- port: 21 (if it doesn't ask you, don't worry about it)
- user name: choosen by you
- password: choosen by you
if this is the first time you have logged in, you will not see any files. you can now
begin to upload your html and image files.
note: remember to make the first page that you want to see named index.html, index.html, default.htm, or default.html.
frontpage
if your account includes frontpage extensions, you can use the frontpage explorer (available at your local software retailer) to view, edit, and administer your
web site. the server has frontpage 98 extensions installed, which means you can use any version of frontpage (98 or lower)
to connect.
to connect:
- open the frontpage explorer
- click "open an existing frontpage web"
- click the "more webs" button
- type in "www.nineinchnails.net" (i.e. yourdomain.com)
- click the "list webs" button, then wait for frontpage to connect
- highlight "<root web>" then click ok
- frontpage will then connect to your web site
if you are connecting for the first time, you will not see any files listed. at this point you can edit your
web site.
