Sometimes labels are very helpful, especially if you prefer Skippy over Jif. Unless you're going to alphabetize an entire record store, for example, labeling NIN as alternative is good idea. I also think you hit the nail right on the head (no pun intended) when you said that a good artist isn't confined by his/her label.
