These are postings to and from Trent Reznor on the Prodigy music bulletin boards during '92-'93. Look for special guest appearances by Marilyn Manson and "Sleazy" Peter Christopherson of Coil. Enjoy.

1. "Fixed" is a 12" of remixes from the "broken" EP. It is
tentatively due out on November 24. I gave various people I
respect full creative control to destroy any aspect of the
original song and see what happens... Remixers include Coil
and J.G. Thirlwell of Foetus. This record is not meant to
a grand statement of a new direction, it's just a 12".

2. The new full album I'm working on will probably be out
next summer ('93) and we will tour extensively from that
point on.

3. I'm not dead (yet), I am mad (still).

4. NO, that is not me in that Gatorade commercial. (We are
investigating legal recourse.)

Ok, assuming you are really the real Trent Reznor, why,
might I ask does SPIN magazine consider you the instigator
of the "industrial" revolution When up until recently, you
had only put out one album under the name Nine Inch Nails
and have been milking THAT for the LAST THREE YEARS? I'm
sorry, but writing music on midi is a breeze, how can it
take you 3 years to record another one?

Sheeah, right, as if!! You guys are all such a bunch of
suckers, you'll believe anyting you read. So, Mr. "Reznor",
answer me this question, who was your last girlfriend that
inspired all this music (which is NOT easy to do on a MIDI,
it takes time and talent) and made you so bitter about the
way the world works. Don't try dodging, 'cause I will know
that you are and will only get you kicked off the board for
a false ID, and don't give me a bogus answer, cause I know
the answer already.

control that. 3. we toured for nearly two solid years
(which takes time) and fought a long and painful legal
battle with our now former record label (which takes time)
during which we couldn't record or do anything. 4. the
statement 'writing music with MIDI is easy' is the words of

hello again...
(still here, Simon)
My you people can get vicious!
Here's some facts to further confuse you as to my TRUE
identity. Over time, you will see that these are all true.
Hmmmn...
1. I've done a few interviews lately that will be coming
out over the next few weeks/months. Alternative Press (#54
-Jan 93) i'm on the cover (photos by Marina Chavez,
somewhere in there they make fun of the contents of my
kitchen). Musician (tent. 1/3 of the cover) and Melody
Maker (the cover) (that's an english paper, Simon)
2. Track #4 on 'fixed' is called 'throw this away'. It's
4.14 in length and contains parts of 'suck' and 'last'.
Look for Butch Vig's name in the credits.
3. I've completed a video for 'happiness in slavery' with
director Jonathan Reiss. It features performance artist Bob
Flanagan (from LA) and you will definitely not see it on
MTV due to content (it gets bloody). There is a short video
for 'pinion' directed by Eric Goode that features a toilet.
As of today, MTV rejected it due to S&M overtones. (I'll
explain what S&M means in a private note, Simon) 'The Box'
however, is going to show it. I just finished filming one
for 'wish' with Peter Christopherson (of Coil) but we
haven't edited it yet. I'm wearing black rubber gloves in
it and it also features Rich Patrick, James Wooley and my
original drummer, Chris Vrenna. (Chris Vrenna has a funny
nickname i gave him, a special prize will be awarded to the
computer nerd that guesses it correctly. Hint- it appears
on an album that he played on.) Let's see... I'm trying to
make a video for 'gave up' (which is my favorite track on
the EP) but so far attempts have failed.
4. 'Fixed' will have the same artwork as 'broken' with the
opposite color scheme. (that means it will have a blueish
tint, Simon)
5. I did a remix for Megadeth (the 'gristle mix') that is
originally 9.50 long. THey edited it down for the cassingle
and video...they may include it in it's entirety on an album
of all remixes they are talking about doing in
spring/summer.
6. I did two mixes for Queen: 'Stone Cold Crazy' and 'Tie
Your Mother Down'. I'm not sure what Hollywood records
plans to do with them.
7. To whoever asked me a list of specific questions...
Allegheny College (Meadville,PA), computer engineering, i
found 'Psychocandy' inspiring, but i don't like them now,
yes, i did a production deal with Sire, but i haven't
produced or remixed anything for them yet (and they are very
cool to deal with)
So there!
If anyone out there has any intelligent comments to make or
questions to ask (other than what i had for breakfast), i'll
check in every once in a while to shake you up a bit.
(that is, if Simon doesn't kick me off the network)

                                  Love (as always)

Once again...

'fixed' is a collection of remixes from the 'broken' EP.
It is tentatively coming out Nov. 24 and it might be a
limited edition release.
(a lot of record company people are concerned that it may
create 'confusion in the marketplace' among consumers)
It should be substantially cheaper than 'broken'
because it technically is a single.

Okay, let's not quabble about who's the biggest fan, or who
doesn't believe so-and-so's identity, who's got the biggest
IQ, and all. If you still don't believe it's Mr. Reznor,
don't bother posting here. He's another human being with a
computer, and he happens to be on prodigy. Whoopie. Good.
This is the question I asked while you were suspended,
so it got returned. < more >
QUESTION: I'd like to know how your studio is set up. You
probably work in a few different places with different
equipment, but I'd like to know what your most used pieces
are.
1) Do you like Roland, Yamaha, KORG, Ensoniq, etc? I have
pretty obsolete KORG stuff: a DW-8000 k-board, and a DDD-1
dum machine.
2) What sampling units do you use?
3) What was your first synthesizer?
You probably have other questions from other people to
answer, so I won't mind if you don't write back right away,
or not at all. I just wanted you to know that I admire your
work and try to emulate it when I can. The saying about the

First of all, i'm impressed by your retention of useless

To update you:
I've recently pretty much bought an entire studio to record
the next several records with. It's currently in LA but
will probably move back to New Orleans...
MIDI stuff:
Macintosh Quadra w/ lots of hard disks running Opcode's

Studio 5, 2 Akai S1100s, Waldorf Microwave, Kurzweil K2000R,

Amek Mozart 56 input automated console, lots of outboard

Hello everybody...

Thanks for the interest and all, but unfortunately i don't
have the time to answer all of your questions.
But, just to keep you informed...
'Fixed' has been delayed (by WEA) and is now due in stores
Dec. 7.
Regarding 1000 Homo DJS...
Al J. & i are friends, we were together in Chicago while he
was working on 'Supernaut' and i ended up singing it. (this
was happening at the same time i was doing Pigface)
I foolishly told my record company (TVT at that time) and
they created all kinds of problems for Wax Trax (1000 homo
DJS label) to the point where i finally told Al to redo it
without me. The version that Wax Trax put out is Al, the
version on the NIN (bootleg, i might add) single is me.
There are no plans at this point of us (me & Al)
collaborating on anything else. We are however friends and
on good terms.
a side note:
Wax Trax just did a distribution deal with TVT...

Hi this is Peter Christopherson of COIL. Just visiting! I
was amazed and impressed to see the COIL section on this
board. Thanks - in answer to availabilty of our CDs, most of
the people who ordered by mail order from Threshold House
should be getting their stuff soon. England has been a very
difficult place to get things together recently but we are
just about up speed now. For those that haven't already
contacted us write to THRESHOLD House, BM/CODEX, London
WC1N 3XX, England or fax 011 44 81 995 2961.
We are also looking for contributions to a book we are
assembling on the subject of the Black Sun. Anybody who
might be interested or with access to information / photos
of tattoos etc please get in touch.

Hello again!
First of all, fact update:
Frank! Wow! Nobody ever asked me about that particular
sample before (middle of 'sanctified'). When we were
recording the record (PHM) we were experimenting with hiding
various things very far back in the mix. That sample is
from one of my favorite movies, 'Midnight Express'.
It's the scene where he is writing a letter explaining his
rather unpleasant situation in prison.
Thanks for listening so close!
Next, sorry, the rumors of live shows are just that. NIN
will NOT be performing live in the near future. I am
assembling the live band and will start rehearsing
(casually) in January and we may do some surprise shows
around L.A. after that.
And yes, if we do, i'll post them here.
Halo is my numbering system for NIN's catalog. Halo 6 is
'fixed'.
Extra lyrics? There were some lyrics that i had written
that i couldn't fit into the songs as i was combing lyrics
with music. I included them because i liked them and also
because they could be discovered by the person that took the
time to read the lyrics.
Regarding the warning for 'mono' devices...
Without getting too far in detail, a scientific property of

sound is it's 'phase'. When recording music in stereo,
you're supposed to be aware of it's phase. If not, certain
parts of the sound will disappear when it's played in mono.
So, we discovered that by messing around with the phase,
we could make elements of the music stand out rather oddly.
(remember Q-sound? -it's based on the same type of
principle)
So...certain songs on 'broken' we mixed out of phase
(because we felt like it)
BUT...
The songs don't sound right on mono devices (like some
radios or TVs). Has anyone heard 'happiness in slavery' on
the radio? I heard it on KROQ in LA and the snare drum was
gone through most of the song. (and yes, it kind of
destroys the groove!)
So, basically, that's what that means.
Blah, blah, blah.

I have some comments on your 'trendy' discussion, but i'll
save them for another time.

                                         Love,

Hi everybody.
Today's update:
'Fixed' release date has been delayed once again (by WEA) to
Dec. 7 (for sure).
I am not on any other networks (except PAN), so Ender or
whatever his name is is wrong. Sorry.
MTV rejected the 'pinion' video but for some reason
aired it unedited last 120 min. I think it was an error on
their part. Does anyone really find that clip offensive?
(side note: MTV's reason for rejecting it was: 'we can't
show the human form in any sort of bondage.' my response:
'what about Madonna?' response: 'Madonna is Madonna.'
-true story)
Speaking of MTV, 'wish' will debut on 120 min. this week. I
heard the feared words 'buzz bin' so it may go into some
sort of rotation. I seriously doubt it will be overplayed
due to the abrasiveness of the track, but who knows.
Regarding the 3" CD that seems to have confused many...
The last two tracks were leftovers from a 12" that should
have been released when we did lollapalooza, but due to
record labels.... ...so, i thought they were good enough
to be released, but did not fit with 'broken', so, i wanted
to give them away but keep them separate from the EP, so, i
came up with the 3" CD idea, but, my record label informed
me that it cost so much to manufacture that they could not
break even EVER regardless of sales, so, i compromised and
allowed the first 250,000 to have the 3" CD, and the rest to
have them on tracks 98-99 (so nobody would be ripped off).
That's about it.
Oh, is anybody out there familiar with the comic book 'the
crow'? If not, check it out and later i'll tell you about
an upcoming film project we may be involved in.

Regarding 'broken' on vinyl:
Our European record label, Island, put out both 'broken' and
'fixed' on vinyl (because it still sells over there).
'Broken' has tracks 1-6 on side one, side two is blank, and
there is a 7" single with 'physical' and 'suck' on it.
'Fixed' splits the songs over both sides. No extra tracks,
but they look cool (weird to see them real big!)
Also....

slavery' that contains additional unreleased remixes
(including a bizarre one by Adrian Sherwood!)

SUBJECT: NIN - FIXED AT LAST-

Attention K-Mart sample finders:
PHM had loads of samples from other people's records, in
fact, i think almost every drum sound was 'borrowed' as a
starting point for manipulation. Longer and more obvious
ones' creators were listed in the credits (this was before
sampling became such a legal issue).
However... i purposely didn't use any samples for
'broken' or the tracks i did on 'fixed'.
EXCEPT during 'pinion', the yelling and dissonant guitars in
the background are from the end of 'it's no game' on David
Bowie's 'scary monsters' record. (played backwards)
Jim Thirlwell sampled a lot of Timothy Leary for track 5 on
'fixed'.
                         -ALSO-
If any of you have any knowledge of 'old-school' rap and
have some time on your hands...
I sampled the drum loop that is prominantly used on 'get
down, make love' and i forgot where it came from...
... if anybody knows, please E-mail me. Hint: i know the
source record is from 1988-89.

SUBJECT: NIN- Q SOUND?

I'm bored, so here's a little story for you.
While recording at A&M Studios in L.A., i noticed among the
hundreds of old tape machines littering the hallways a
strange podium sized metal box with a computer monitor on
top. On the side it said 'Q-Sound'. Upon further
investigation, i learned that it was indeed the infamous
Q-Sound device (covered with dust, i might add.)
They told me when it first came out, the cost to use it was
either one or two points (percentage points of the artist's
profit from sales) of the record. That is a LOT. A
producer may get up to four points, usually one or two.
Well, guess how much it costs now?
$100 a day!
Q-Sound didn't turn out to be quite the revolution they had
hoped. So we hooked it up while we were mixing 'suck', but
the mix 'suck'ed, so we aborted it.
Q-Sound does work, but you have to be in a controlled
environment. It doesn't work in headphones or cars. TR

i'm starting to wonder....was there a girl ??? maybe...but
head like a hole is about how people worship money and don't
care about anything else, terrible lie is about god being a
jerk, down in it could be about anything, sanctified is
about hellraiser 2, kinda i want to is about peer pressure,
the only time is about self-doubt and alchoholism, and
ringfinger is about satan worshipping. so that leaves>>>>>>>
something i can never have, sin, and that's what i get.
maybe there never was a girl, and he just sort of
fictionalized the songs to convey the mood he wanted to.
that's what robert from the cure does, cause he's married,
and maybe trent took characteristics from movies and books
and things to make "the girl", but she doesn't really exist.

just a thought, and no one tell me how
wrong i am about my quick-take interpretations, there's
really more to the songs, but i didn't want to write that
much. you get the idea........luces kumiko case

Hi everybody,
I'm still around, just not as much. The inane discussions
on the modern rock bb have left me dulled so this bb (even
though i hate techno) is a welcome surprise.
Nothing much is new i can tell you about, except we were
nominated for a grammy in the metal category ?!?
- figure that one out. (i hope we don't win)
Also in case anybody was wondering, the 'down in it' single
was only going to be released on vinyl (because my old
record label sucks) so i put most of it on the 'head like a
hole' single (which obviously IS on CD) - then the greedy
record label releases 'd.i.i.' on CD which is quite
redundant. Sorry if you feel ripped off.
Oh, try to find the import 'h.l.a.h.' single. It has the
artwork that was intended for the original release but
was rejected by TVT because it cost too much (it had
color).
It also has a cool other version (like you need one) of
'h.l.a.h.'

                                     Bye,

Greetings.
New music & tour news: the new full record will PROBABLY be
out in august or september with an EP/12" single out in may
/ june. We will PROBABLY have two songs on the soundtrack
for the upcoming (summer release) film version of 'The Crow'
which is based on the comic book (we are also appearing in
it). One of the songs is Joy Division's 'dead souls'.
We will not officially tour until after the full record is
out. When we do, we will probably go around the states
twice, with different shows. We are only playing smaller
venues where we can be seen and interacted with, so in some
cities we may play multiple nights.
NIN mainstays for touring have been: Richard Patrick,
guitar; Chris Vrenna, drums; Jeff Ward, drums; James
Woolley, keyboards.
'now i'm nothing' started as a joke, later became the name
of a tour we did, and then was a lyric in a mini-song/ intro
for 'terrible lie' that we used for lollapalooza-era shows.
We have never done a cure cover.
And finally................

the cover of PHM is a photo of the blades of some sort of
turbine stretched vertically so they would look somewhat
like bones or a rib cage.

                                      sleep well,

People don't tell you you must devote your life to God or be
damned. They are believing in God's Word -The Bible- and it
clearly states that "Unless you are born again you will not
enter the K ingdom of Heaven". Also, it states "That if you
believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus
is Lord, you shall be saved." They are not making up their
own "rules". They are just following what the Bible says. If
someone doesn't believe in the Bible, then I guess there's
not much to say.

...really bored and just checking in...
no, i wasn't at the grammys, but i did see michael jackson
at a party afterwards (he did NOT look human in real life).
NIN won! So what!
Remember, the awards and nominations are chosen by select
industry people, not the public. If you check out who was
nominated in some of the categories (including me for metal)
you realize how out of touch these people are.
We (Peter Christopherson & myself) are working on a
compilation video & laser disc for 'broken'. It should
include videos for pinion, wish, help me..., happiness...,
and gave up. If we are allowed to sell it, look for it in
late May.
Look for a new single/12" in June, and full all-new record
in Aug. or Sept. followed by lots of touring.
I am producing a band called 'prick' which will come out
this fall on my label.
Once again, the 3" mini-disc came with the first 250,000
copies of 'broken'. It cost the record label too much money
in manufacturing to continue making them.
'Fixed' was limited to 60,000 copies, they have sold out -
we just released 20,000 more so you should be able to find
it soon if interested.
The colored HLAH single (the import) is the way i intended
it to be released, but TVT released the black & white one
with all the extra (i think boring) mixes & ugly cover.
Bye
